What to look for when buying a camping bed for two

So, you’re interested in buying a camping bed? What are some things to look out for while shopping? Our buyer’s guide should help choose the best camping bed for two people.

Camping beds are available in a full range of sizes, from single to queen and king. If you are of a larger build, then it’s worth spending the extra on a larger camping bed. Don’t forget also to check the length of the bed. Manufacturers sometimes reduce the length, and having your feet hanging over the edge of the bed quickly becomes uncomfortable.

Mattress thickness or height

The range of mattress thickness can vary from just a couple of inches to 12 inches or more. A thin mattress is okay as a temporary bed for an overnight stay, but may quickly become uncomfortable for longer periods. The thicker mattresses have the comfort but are much more bulky and heavy. On the plus side, the thicker mattress is easier to get in and out of.

Ease of setup

Self-inflating camping beds are the easiest, as you simply roll them out and wait for a few minutes. Air beds with built-in pumps are generally the quickest to inflate, and very easy to use. The large, thick camping beds take a lot longer to inflate and are much heavier.

Battery or mains pump

If you will never use your camping bed outside of your home, then buy one with a mains air pump. If you intend to go camping, then a battery-operated or a hand pump are better options.

Built-in Pump

Built-in pumps are convenient. For a start, you can’t forget the pump when packing your car to go camping! They also inflate and deflate the camping bed quickly. The downsides are extra weight, and if the pump fails, it may not be possible to replace it.

Bed frame or no bed frame

Our choice of best camping bed was the Coleman Queen Airbed. This was partly influenced by the folding frame that it is supplied with. Lifting the mattress from the floor generates airflow around it and can prevent sweating. The frame also protects the mattress from objects on the ground that could damage the bed.

Make sure the frame is built from sturdy materials. A weak frame will not only fail more quickly, but the bed will move around when you are in it. Aluminum frames are strong and corrosion-resistant. Steel frames are stronger but heavier and prone to rusting if they get wet.

Camping beds come in a wide range of materials, depending on the intended use. For outdoor use camping beds, look for waterproof material that prevents damp from the ground seeping in. Also, check the dernier number for the material. The higher the number, the more resistant it will be to damage from stones or other objects.

Final Thoughts

As you can see from the review, there’s a vast range of different types and styles of camping beds. Which one is best for you will depend on its intended use.

For very occasional use, such as an overnight stay with family, then a simple low-cost air bed will probably be sufficient. If you intend to use it regularly, then the deeper air beds will provide greater comfort, but are much larger and heavier.

For camping use, you also have to consider where and when you’ll be camping. None of the camping beds in the review are suitable for hiking and camping, as they are just too heavy and bulky. But if you regularly visit campsites in your car, then size is less of an issue. I this case, the Coleman Queen Airbed offers a great balance between comfort and practicality.
